A word from Kimber, the 'Dog Astronaut' costume creator:
Featured in the photo is Harper, an eight-year-old Golden Retriever. I decided to make her an astronaut costume to match my alien Halloween attire. Her costume was extremely simple to put together! First, grab a cheap silver windshield sunshade. Then, trace the outline of a current coat or vest you already have for your dog on the back side of the sunshade. Cut it out. Make sure you give yourself extra room for the belly flaps to adjust as needed. Once the silver vest is the size you need, sew on either snaps or velcro (which is what I used) to allow the belly straps and neck pieces to attach together. For the jetpack: find one empty two liter and two water bottles. Remove the labels and spray paint them all silver. Allow to dry. Touch up as needed. Once dry, hot glue the three bottles together. Then hot glue to the silver vest in the center. To make the flames: use red, orange, and yellow construction paper to cut out varying sizes. Roll together and staple to create a 3D effect. Hot glue one end of the 'flames' inside the two smaller, water bottles. For the finishing touches, find an American flag and NASA emblem online and print out on sturdy paper. Cut and hot glue on the sides. Place the finished product on your dog and watch as they transform from mere Earthling to space-roving adventurer!
