The Easter Bunny and Company Costume

Our fuzzy, all white pony was born to be a bunny! For our local barn's Halloween Costume Class my 9 year old daughter, Ally, and I knew that we had to make a bunny costume for our leased pony, Sean! Sean's costume was made out of white furry material from head to bunny tail, as were his four bunny paws! I didn't get the bunny tail in quite the right spot at first, but after several fittings and sewing extra furry material to the hind-end, I was able to relocate the bunny tail to its proper bunny place!. I stuffed the bunny ears with cone-shaped floral foam to keep them light and standing up! His bunny whiskers were made of thick pipe cleaners covered in black fabric and his Bunny buck teeth were made from a sheet of white craft foam. Ally dressed up as an Easter Basket which was an old white plastic Rubbermaid laundry basket with the bottom cut out! We weaved colorful ribbon throughout the basket and added a foam swim noodle wrapped in ribbon for the Easter basket handle. We used spray adhesive to cover the top of the basket and Ally's lime green shirt with Easter grass and then attached Easter Eggs, Peeps and all sorts of Easter candy. Ally had to wear her riding helmet, so we covered it with a green shower cap, then adhered more Easter grass, a butterfly and Easter Eggs to her helmet too! A little girl, Isabel, couldn't enter the contest with her pony, who was sick, so we made a costume for Isabel, too. Isabel was dressed as an Easter Chick inside a hatched egg. We first tried to make the egg out of paper mache, but the 36" balloon burst, and our egg collapsed because the paper mache was just a bit too heavy. We decided to use cardboard instead. After cutting the hatched egg shape, we attached white felt to both the inside and outside of the egg and added colorful ribbon to get the decorated Easter egg effect. WE grabbed some straw from the barn and some yellow feathers and glued those to the bottom part of the egg to make a nest. We glued a yellow feather boa to each of two yellow canvas straps, which we attached to the egg to use as a harness so Isabel could wear the egg, hands-free, so she could use her hands to lead Sean around the ring. We all had a great day and Sean must have been a bunny in his previous life because he was an absolute saint about wearing his bunny costume. So funny to see the reaction of the other ponies and horses in the class! One pony was absolutely fascinated and did a complete double-take when he saw the Giant Easter bunny come hopping his way!
