A word from Kristine, the 'Avatar Neytiri' costume creator:
Hello, I am Kristine and I am wearing the avatar costume. I was debating what kind of costume I wanted to go with because it is very easy to go to the store and buy a costume, but I wanted mine to be different. So I thought what could I be that requires detail and paint, and I thought of the Avatar. So I first looked up lots of photos of Neytiri and I watched the movie again too.
I shopped at Walmart, Michaels and Joann Fabric for all my supplies. I made the shirt from felt fabric (I got the idea for the shirt from scenes in the movie). I cut slits in the felt shirt to make it look more like the shirt she wore in the movie and I used string for the straps. I also added feathers to the front of the shirt. I also used felt to cut out the ears and I painted them blue.
I used some leggings that I already had and spray painted them and cut slits in them to make them look like the paints Neytiri wore in some of the scenes in the movie.
I bought a wig and braided some of the hair on the wig. For the tail I found an old tail from a previous costume and painted it blue (which saved money because I didn't have to buy materials to make the tail). I made the head piece out of felt fabric that I cut out. I used string to attach it to a head band. I used felt also to make the arm band.
For my body, I painted my whole face, neck, chest, stomach, back, part of my legs and part of my feet. I used dark blue, and light blue craft paint for the main body color and the stripes. I added the white dots on the face with white craft paint. I used some black eye shadow under my eyes and mixed some with the blue paint for my lips. I also wore mascara to imitate their long eye lashes. I sprayed some makeup mist on my face and body to try and prevent the paint from cracking and wearing off fast.
This costume took about 4 hours to get completely finished. It was a lot of work, but well worth it when I walked into a costume party and everyone knew who I was and complimented me. I had fun with this costume and look forward to next year.
