A word from Heidi, the 'Bikehopper' costume creator:
I've always wanted to see if I could make something wearable out of a bicycle! I'm interested in playing with different materials and had not yet ventured into metal/hardware. I was enamored with the beauty and intrigue of grasshoppers when watching them climb up a pole one day, and thought various bicycle parts (brake calipers for hands, tire tread for the leg pattern, etc.) lent themselves well to morphing into a grasshopper. I was up for the challenge. I had to cut up the frame of a donated, discarded bicycle, grind it down, and weld some pieces together (spokes for the wing pattern, calipers and chain to the frame pieces). For the grasshopper body I used a regular office stapler to attach all of the rubber tubing together on the inside. I used hot glue, bolts, and wire for the headpiece. A little cumbersome on the dance floor, but otherwise worth it! :)
