A word from Laurel, the 'Champagne Spray' costume creator:
This costume was inspired by an image from the Metropolitan Museum of Art circa 1872 bustle. To me it looked like stacked champagne glasses. With this costume I wanted to use the bustle for fun, not formality. Atop the corset is a spray flowing down to the bustle with the idea of overflowing champagne glasses. The corset is made with coil steel boning. The steel bone provided a nice support for the spray which slides into the corset between bones. A busk provides front corset closure and lacing in the back makes it adjustable to larger sizes. I used a $12 bolt cutter from the hardware store rather than the very expensive bone cutters. Duct tape made a fine tip for the steel. Simple hoop wire is used in the bustle and spray. Purse toggles connect the stripped wrist bands, skirt gathering and waist band. Organza florets have rhinestone accents in the image of bubbles in the champagne.
