A word from Carrie, the 'Dark Phoenix' costume creator:

I am a fan of all things Superhero--Especially Marvel. I remember loving the first X-Men movie so much and really was drawn to Jean Grey. She was smart, strong, beautiful, talented and yet she had her own fears and insecurities as well. I love the character development she has as she goes from light Phoenix to Dark Phoenix. And as much as i wasn't a huge fan of the third movie, The Last Stand, i was intrigued by Jean's costume. So that is the base inspiration for the costume. I really liked the style and color, but i knew something was missing. It needed a little flare from the comic book look. So that's where the gold boots, gloves and sash come into play. I then had a friend show me a picture of Light Phoenix from a comic book and she had fire surrounding her like wings and it hit me....I NEED FIRE WINGS!!! I had absolutely no idea how or if i would pull this off, but i started searching on YouTube and other cosplay sites about how to make wings and i got super overwhelmed and thought maybe tit wasn't going to happen. Fast forward a few months, I met someone at work that knows how to make wings...and not just wings, but has made wings for the Victoria's Secret Angels! So, he introduced me to one of this friends--Hal from PixelArts Props-- who was willing to not only help me with the wings, but he let ME make them!! So, he would show me what to do and then i would do it! So the wings are made out of a couple different gages of wire and i braised them all together after following a pattern that this guy drew for me. After the framework was done, i covered one side of each wing with a very light fabric that i would hot glue the feathers to. The harness is also made out of a thick gage wire, so the wings are really quite light. As far as the costume goes, i found a McCall pattern for one of the Snow White costumes from Once Upon A Time and used that for the red jacket/dress part. I used a Hemp/silk charmeuse for the fabric for that. The sash is just made of metallic gold spandex and the medallion i made out of a small round mirror and i used e6000 to glue on Swarovski Crystals and the Phoenix emblem--which is just made out of metallic gold heavy scrapbook paper and a couple layers of foam. The boots were actually originally black but i used several coats of a gold metallic shoe paint to make them that color. So, the only things that i did not make or alter in some way are the pants, corset and gloves--which i may end up making my own gloves eventually because these did not last like i wanted them to. This costume has been quite the process, but i am incredibly happy with the result!!
