A word from Toni, the 'La Muerte' costume creator:

A few months ago I saw a movie trailer for The Book of Life and instantly fell in love with La Muerte. I just had to do the costume. I am wearing my completely home made costume. The hat is made from 3/4 inch installation foam, I will include progress photos for anyone wanting to create the same effective. The skulls are three sets of ten LED lights which are fed through the fabric of the hat and the on and off switches hidden in the flowers. I hand glued every flower on the hat and dress. The base of the dress is also made from 3/4 foam and is hallowed out. The hat and dress are both 4 foot wide. I figued the circumference and placed candles every 7 inches or so. As far as the candles, I could have went for plain tapestry ones, but I wanted the lit effect so I opted for safe lite candles, however I couldn't find ones that looked melted, so I hand dripped liquid latex on every one, then airbrushed them, then dipped them in mask laytex to create the full effect. To make the dress conform well with my body, I made a my own mannequin by covering my body, from my thighs to my shoulders in three layers of duct tape, I recommend wearing a skirt and a longer shirt you don't care for anymore, then once you have your three layers of duct tape, cut it off from the back, if you cut it off on thw front it is extremely hard to line back up properly, then tape it back together and fill it with cotton and you have a mannequin. As far as the makeup, I used a cream that didn't have petroleum jelly or mineral oil, it tends to hold up better and you can usually find that at a costume shop. Try to avoid clown white, it smears easily when wet, and if they ask if you want a setting powered, say no, baby powered works just as well and costs way less. :) If you have any other questions, just let me know and I am happy to answer them! :)

I created this costume for an anime convention, Halloween, and the procession in Tucson, az. I hope you enjoy it.
