This homemade costume for babies entered our 2019 Halloween Costume Contest.
A word from Alanna, the 'Crabby Baby' costume creator:
I made this costume for my 8 month old baby as i wanted something that would look cute as well as funny as she crawled since she did not yet walk.
I had a friend's "Under the Sea" costume party last October and figured a baby crab would be the life of the party!
Materials:
Body/legs/claws: red and orange felt, black sharpie for drawing some details and highlights, wire,
Eyes: Pipe cleaners, two stryrofoam balls, pair of googly eyes
tools: glue gun and wire cutters
-I drew patterns for the body ,legs, and claws first and then cut them out of the felt (i doubled up as all body parts consist of two layers of felt)
- i then assembled the crab by gluing the top and bottom layers of the eight legs, the body and claws with a glue gun.
-I sandwiched a wire the length of each leg in between the two layers of felt on each leg so that the legs would have some bounce and be able to be bent a bit for a livelier look
- i stuffed the body of the crab with some pillow filling to give it a more 3d look
- i drew in some details with a sharpie and cut some slivers of orange felt to give it some dimension and highlights.
-i cut red spaghetti ties from an old bikini and made straps that i glued to the body of the crab so the baby could put her arms through them and wear the crab as a back pack basically ( when i was carrying the baby in the carrier i just attached the costume to the front and it worked great too!)
-as for the eyes i glued some googly eyes onto two styrofoam balls and attached them to pipe cleaners which i later glued on to a red beanie
I wish i could upload a video because it was hilarious how the baby looked crawling in costume! looked like a real crabby making his way through the sand ;)
total price $25
Enjoy!
