A word from Elizabeth, the 'Dryad' costume creator:
My daughter is a reader and loves to pick her costume from books. This particular year she was reading a lot of fantasy, so I was not surprised when she said she wanted to be a dryad.
To make her costume we found a simple red velvet dress at a thrift store, then bleached and tie-dyed it until it resembled an autumn camoflauge pattern. I wanted to add some bark, so I made a trunk-style corset from craft foam. After that, I added flow layers of fabric to her skirt with lots of fall leaves sewn on. Her crown was made from sticks we gathered then glued on more leaves. The estimated cost was probably about $25 to $30.
