A word from Chelsea, the 'Emperor Scorpion' costume creator:
Leo, age 5, is dressed as the biggest, fiercest, most poisonous Emperor Scorpion ever! Scorpions are one of Leo's favorite animals, so when I asked him what he wanted to be for Halloween, the answer was easy! It was not so easy, however, to create this costume. First, I made a wire frame with wire for the tail that could be sewn into his jacket. I then cut pool noodles into sections, covered them with black fabric, slid them onto the wire tail, and hand stitched them together. For the claws, stinger, and fangs, I drew the shapes on paper based off an image of a real emperor scorpion. Then I cut them out of fabric and sewed them together with a few extra pieces for dimension. The claws are gloves that fit over his sleeves and can be removed; they also have pockets for his fingers so that they can snap open and shut to grab prey! I used a simple jacket pattern of my own design, complete with elongated hood and fangs. Lastly, we added glow in the dark paint to really make the details pop--just like real scorpions, which glow in black light. Watch out for this scorpion--HE IS POISONOUS!
