This homemade costume for boys entered our 2015 Halloween Costume Contest.
A word from Andy, the 'Garbage Truck' costume creator:
Homemade garbage truck where three sets of lights came on
individually, as well as a car horn. My son, who was dressed in a homemade WM uniform, with its patches, etc. carried around a homemade green trash can that was made from foam paper and green spray paint to collect candy and dumped it in the truck's dumpster. Front dumpster was used to collect candy, then my son would get inside truck and manually pull the levers back where the candy fell perfectly into a canvas bag slot in the rear of the truck.
I used a push buggy as the chassis, then used old thin pieces of plywood I had laying around for the sides, cardboard and pieces of Styrofoam for the dumpster, pvc pipes for the handles, etc. Also used a 12v battery to connect small running lights, headlights, yellow flashing beacon, and a real car horn - all which connected to their respective toggle switches and car horn button. Used green, white, and black paint, as well as a hand-drawn logo that was copied in different sizes. Three copper pies were used as axles to connect six dolly wheels/tires. Chrome spray paint used for wheels. Reflective tape also used.
It was a huge success! Especially interesting to see kids throw their own candy into the dumpster all night just to see my son pull it back and into the rear slot.
Total cost: about $250.
Total time: about 50 hours
