A word from Melisa, the 'Glinda the Good Witch of the North' costume creator:
Presenting..Glinda, The Good Witch of the North!
After seeing The Wizard Of Oz for the first time, 7 year old Alex knew she HAD to be Glinda for Halloween!
This meant an early start, lots of planning and many hours of work!
I'm Alex's mom, Melisa. I make her costumes every year without a pattern. Together, we design and make the costume over several weeks away the expense of a glitter and tulle filled house!
This costume used 22 yards of fabric in total!
The base is a 5 tiered hoop skirt with a tulle petticoat, a cotton blend base skirt and a triple layered tulle top layer.
I made the top separate from the skirt with a crisscross design, secured with velcro for easy on/off process.
We found a great 65% off fabric sale and were able to get all the fabric needed for under $20!
A craft store that was going out of business enabled me to buy expensive crystals at a fraction of the original cost!
The skirt pieces were created by gathering then adding elastic to make putting it on quick and easy. I used a decorative hem at the bottom to give it an interesting finished look.
The entire skirt was quite heavy with all the fabric so I used suspenders to distribute the weight better and keep it in place.
I finished the top layer of tulle with glitter stars that were hand drawn and 100s of crystal pieces.
The crown is made of glittery card stock. I glued two pieces together, pinning the thin wire with tiny stars between the layers. Adding a crystal piece to the front and edging the entire piece in glitter. I lined the bottom edge with color matched pearls to give it a nice finished look. I added crystal stars made with glue and glitter around the crown. Inside, I glued strips of fabric to rest on her head to support and steady the crown.
The wand lights up!
This was created with Dollar store Christmas star that I sprayed with adhesive and loaded up with glitter! Then I put in a small strand of battery powered twinkle lights, matching tulle from the dress was carefully placed inside to conceal the lights and battery pack. A dowel rod painted silver and hot glued to the star completed the beautiful wand!
