This homemade costume for women entered our 2018 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Jennifer, the 'A Rain Cloud' costume creator:

This is my own costume that I actually came up with due to all the rain the Dallas Ft Worth area has been having the entire month of October. This costume was surprisingly very easy to make and here are the instructions. ENJOY!
Materials used:

For the CLOUD
Somebero hat- Party city $15
Clear beads for raindrops -shopwildthings.com $20
Pearl beading for raindrops- hobby lobby $10
Poly fill (2 bags) for cloud - hobby lobby $3.99 each
Led lights (2 strands) - five below $5 each
Gray fabric paint (2 cans) - hobby lobby $6 each
Tacky glue (2 bottles) -michaels $2.99 each
Cosplay wig- amazon $23
Screwdriver-own
String-own
Blue sharpie-own

FOR THE CLOTHING:
Silver fabric 1 yard - hobby lobby $9.99
Beige stringy fabric - hobby lobby $9.99
Leggings, shoes, and under shirt are my own

Makeup: gray face paint along with my existing makeup (done my a friend of mine)

ps use as many coupons you can at hobby lobby and michaels. Each thing I got I used either a 40% off coupon or a 60% off for one item

Execution of poly fill for cloud:

I used tacky glue to secure a small layer of poly fill on to cover the entire top of the somebero. I then added an outline of the LED lights (used a blue sharpie to color the tiny LED lights for ambiance), and gave a spotty layer of fabric paint to give it that storm cloud look.
Repeat this process until desired height/thickness/wow factor is achieved.
Take chopstick (provided in polyfill) to fill in less filled areas and create a even distribution of polyfill.

Allow 24 hours to dry.

Execution of raindrops:
NOTE: the hat I chose has a shiny outline of string around the perimeter of the brim of the hat. (She photo)
Carefully turn hat over and use the screwdriver to puncture random holes in the hat. You will use the holes to place the raindrops through. Next, take the clearbead strands and push through a hole, then take your other hand and pull it near to the brim. Use the string and weave it through the shiny string that’s on the somebero and knot it. This will secure the beads strand. Continue to repeat this process until you have the desired amount of “raindrop” strands.
Try the hat on and cut the strands at different lengths give it a unique natural look

NOTE: I carefully turned my hat right side up periodically to ensure my placement was balanced and to my liking.
After I finished I realized it may have been easier and more efficient to do the bottom and then begin to start the top. Due to my supplies coming in at different times and my impatience I made it happen to the best of my ability

Once I had my desired look I then started to layer the poly fill the same way as I did on the top.

Execution of the clothing.

For the fringes beige fabric I cut little “tendrils” at different lengths to give is a swishy look

Lay silver yard of fabric out then lay the beige fringe fabric in the opposite direction. Make it as the shape of an X. Then in the middle of both cut a line large enough to get your head through.

I then tried it on and I fastened the silver around my forearms to create a bustled sleeve. Repeat for the second sleeve. Then attach the silver overhang sleeve to the beige material to create another bustled look.

I put it in a hanger and pulled the tendrils to stretch them out and I randomly placed the raindrops strands that I had previously cut from the hat and knotted them on tendrils .

Love the idea of using a sombrero.i used foam board and a cheap costume top hat for mine. I should have used heavier line for beading my raindrops. They wouldn't have tangled so easily. I used the flashing function on the lights to simulate lightning. I love your ideas for the " dress"
