This homemade costume for babies entered our 2014 Halloween Costume Contest.

A word from Amanda, the 'Boo from Monsters Inc.' costume creator:

My daughter is shown wearing her Boo costume I made. I literally hand stitched everything (no sewing machine. crazy right?) and I think it turned out perfect! I bought shiny purple dot fabric (2yards) white felt, white minky dot fabric, 3 inch styrofoam balls, black pipe cleaner, yellow yarn, batting material, velcro, and used cardboard to line a part of her hood for the eyes to stay up and used a combination of cocoa powder, flour, and grey eye shadow to tint the string to look like a dirty mop on her head. She loves monsters Inc and were always told she looks like boo. plus monsters Inc is her favorite movie. I tried looking online for a premade costume originally but they were all $90+! I made this costume for $30! And I'm so proud of the result. Her smile is confirmation enough that I did an awesome job. Thank you for the opportunity!

Hello Vicky and thank you so much. Unfortunately I can't tell you where to buy this costume because I made it myself :) this is the only one I made but I'm thinking of making more since a lot of people have been loving my creation. I will comment on this thread again if I do!

Absolutely adorable! I'd love to see a tutorial or pattern. You did a fantastic job, especially hand stitching it all!!

#9 comment by natalie October 9, 2015

No tutorial? How exactly did you make the hood?

#10 comment by Amanda Ayala October 10, 2015

Hello natalie. Since this was my very first costume,i gathered info from other tutorials with other pieces of clothing. I would search how to make hoods,or how to make a vest etc and go from there to put this one together. How I made her eyes stand up,I'd attach something sturdy yet light to the two pipe cleaners. Its in and underneath the fabric so it's not visible. I made sure to double up the pipe cleaners to make it thicker so the eye balls don't droop. Then I stitched the hood together a few times until it was sturdy when I put it on my daughter's head. Then stitched on the teeth, hair, etc, by looking at exact photos of boo from the movie so it could look more exact.

Like I said, this was my first official project I've ever done like this and my first contest. Submitting a tutorial was required But for the judges to read. Hope this helped somewhat :) thanks for looking!

You did an amazing job on this costume!! Did you happen to use an patterns?

#12 comment by Amanda A. May 23, 2016

Thank you cherri!! I appreciate that so much. I actually didn't use a pattern. I just took a bunch of pictures of boo and made it that way :) It was definitely fun that way

#15 comment by Erika September 22, 2016

Hi great job. I love it. Would like to dress up my daughter in this costume , have you started selling this costume?

#16 comment by Thanks, Joanie September 26, 2016

Really great job. I always made my daughters Halloween costumes as a child and she's asking me to make a boo monster Inc costume for her little girl who is 9.5 months old. Your daughter looks just about 2. I'm trying to gauge if I need less or more fabric. Also, did you use the white minky fabric to cover shoes/socks like you did for the arms. What was the width of your purple fabric please.

#26 comment by Maria Flores September 12, 2018

Hi Amanda, I was wondering if you ever decided on making some of these to sale. If so, I am very interested. This is the lsecond year I have looked for this costume for my daughter and I can't seem to find it. The smallest size they have is 2T which is too big for my daughter.

#27 comment by Annabell Scofield September 26, 2018

Hii!!! My daughter is 4months old and already has super long hair. We really want to do boo this year but can't find anything and we would love to custom order this for my daughter.

#28 comment by Agnes October 2, 2018

hi I noticed you said you bought 3 inch styrofoam balls for the eyes. is that 3 inch (75mm) diameter as this seems very small but looks a lot bigger in the picture.

#29 comment by Monica October 4, 2018

What kind of stitch did you use? I'm in the process of making one but I don't know what type of stitch to use.

Hi Amanda, I'm looking to make this costume for my daughter this year. Did you by chance use a pattern? Or did you piece multiple patterns together to make this costume? You did an amazing job!

#33 comment by Amanda A August 24, 2019

Stefanie. I actually didnt use a pattern at all. I didnt know where to start. I just went online and looked up different angles of boo from the movie and made it that way. It was my first sewing and costume project so I definitely appreciate all your kind words!

#34 comment by Amanda September 28, 2019

Would you sell?

#35 comment by Hope October 2, 2019

I'm using your costume as inspiration. Did you just paint the back side of the styrofoam ball to make it black? And did you use multiple pipe cleaners for the eye? I'm worried it won't be sturdy enough to stay up.

#36 comment by Toni September 12, 2020

I love this costume... you did an amazing job. Would you sell this one or be willing to make another?? Our whole family is doing monster inc this year .
