A word from Caroline, the 'Flying Monkey' costume creator:
My 5 year old Male English Bulldog, Sumo, is wearing a costume I made for him as a Flying Monkey from the Wizard of Oz. After taking my niece to see Wicked on Broadway for her birthday over the Summer, I was inspired to do an Oz themed Halloween Costume. I will be the Witch of the West and needed a flying monkey to do my bidding. After doing some online shopping for a canine flying monkey costume I was dissatisfied with the cost, as well as the selections offered, so I decided to make my own.
Making the costume took a total of 3 weeks. I looked to the movie as a guide. The coat is made from felt pieces hand sewn to a child's t-shirt that was cut to fit Sumo's body. I used red felt and white fabric paint to make the designs. A Large brown pipe cleaner was cut and sewn to the back of the coat and curled up into a monkey tail. The wings are (after a few failed attempts at my own construction) made with child's black bat wings with black feathers stitched to it and grey felt glued together at the tip to hold the feathers better. They have elastic arm bands that slip through holes in the coat at his harness site for easy removal and comfort. The head piece is made from a black foam visor worn upside down. Large brown pipecleaners were bent to shape the ears and tan and pink felt sewn in to give the inner ear appearance, and attached to the visor. Grey felt was glued to the visor and red felt and white ribbon glued on to form the design. All products used to make the costume are non-toxic and available at most craft stores. The only pre-made parts used were on the wings and the visor.
