A word from Gavin, the 'Iron Man Suit' costume creator:
Hi, my name is Gavin Visnansky. I’m 13 years old, in 8th grade, and I made the Mark 4 Iron Man suit. I started this Iron Man suit in August. Each of the approximately 300 pieces of cardboard were intricately cut out by hand using an Xacto knife. Like a puzzle, the pieces came together to form the costume and were held together with hot glue... a lot of hot glue. For three months, every day when I got home from school, I would do my homework and then spend the rest of the evening hot gluing, cutting cardboard, and spray painting. Every weekend, instead of hanging out with friends, I spent it on the floor of my bedroom working away. Using articles and videos online, I learned how to piece together LEDs, switches, wire, and batteries to make the eyes, chest, and hands light up. As I got closer and closer to finishing the costume, it became clear that I was running out of time. With literally five minutes to spare, I finished wiring the chest piece and headed outside to go trick-or-treating. This is the biggest, most elaborate project I have ever worked on. Knowing that I was able to complete every step along the way completely by myself was a feeling I will never forget. I hope you guys really enjoy it.
