A word from Marjorie, the 'Kubo and Beetle' costume creator:
We had seen the trailer for Kubo and the two strings and immediately fell in love with the characters and the movie that we wanted to recreate the characters.
Shawn, my husband was wearing Beetle. The complete armor was made up of anti fatigue mat foam (eva foam). It was cut and then bent into the shapes that we needed using a heat gun. And then it was plasti-dipped and airbrushed. His bow was from a branch from our willow tree in our back yard that we let dry, painted and detailed.
I, Marjorie, was Kubo. My Kimono was sewn together patterned with and old kimono robe that I had and was detailed using fabric paint. The belt was remnant fabric and so was his rag, where in the movie he had kept all of his origami. Pants and socks were mine. Slippers were altered flip flops where I added the twine to them.
I also made the monkey's head sculpted using crayola air dry clay. Monkeys fur was made with felt.
Every year we throw a Halloween party at my husbands karate school and every year we build costumes to smiles on everyone's faces. We put a lot of time and effort into building the costumes!
