A word from Toph, the 'Lars' costume creator:
My name is Toph, and I am 16 years old. This is my original character Lars! I created his costume by myself. Lars is my “TrueSona” which means he is a character that is based off of me! I wanted to create a character that would represent me and who I want to be. I am transgender but have not yet transitioned, so I gave him top surgery scars. He has 3 eyes, and his 3rd eye represents the way I see the world on the autism spectrum. His peacock feathers signify rebirth and hope, and how I pulled through everything I’ve been through. Lastly, the stars signify Steven Universe, which is my favorite show.
I made this costume over the course of 2 months. For the feet, I created my own pattern. They involved a bit of hand sewing but mostly machine sewing. I added zippers to the feet so they could be easily zipped on and off! I then created the head, which was by far the most complicated. I have him a “detailed maw” so he has gums and teeth! His face has a lot of hand sewn details, and took a very long time! But it was worth it! His heat features a zipper in the back, and a fan that can be removed to help with my breathing! I then created his bodysuit by patterning it off of a duct tape dummy. It was very difficult to create a connected tail, but I was able to get the shape to look okay! Lastly, I created the paws. For these, I used a pattern! The full costume took around 98 hours!
