A word from Justine, the 'Lego Robin, Candy Buttons, Minecraft Steve' costume creator:
In this photo is Lego Robin(left) worn by my son David age 9.
Materials:
1 1/2 - 2 inch thick styrofoam sheets(2 of them) from menards ( used for insulation ect)
Paint
Black material
Foam craft sheets ( gold and red)
Small hand saw
Hot glue
Sand paper (fine)
Clear coat spray
Directions:
I traced several large large circles onto the styrofoam sheet then traced a smaller circle in the middle of each large one ( make sure you leave about 2-3 between the large and small circle) also make sure they are large enough to slip over your child's head, and tall enought to couverture your child's head. Once you have enough circles traced you can then cut all of them out including the inside circles. ( I left the top large circle full with out a smaller one in the middle) now trace 4 smaller circle for the bottom of the head and the top of the Lego head. Once all circles are cut out , hot glue them one on top of the other. Once they are glued and dry you can measure where you would like the mouth to be placed (I made the mouth big enough for my son to see out of it), draw your mouth on and take a small hand saw and cut out your mouth. Now that it is assembled and mouth cut out you can begin to sand the head with fine sand paper to make it smooth and even. Once the sanding is all complete paint the head the color of you choice( or decorate it how you wish.) don't forget to paint the eyes on.
Now for the body:I used my other sheet of styrofoam and cut out to pyramid shapes that where flat on top( each the same size) the cut out some smaller parts to connect the 2 pieces together. Now you can paint this the color of your choice. I then used the foam craft sheets to make my own decals once painted I hot glued them on. After the body and head were painted I then took them all outside and sprayed them with a clear coat spray to seal the color on. Once that is dry I attached my black material to make robins hood and cape( I hot glued these on also)
Candy button ( middle ) worn by my daughter Veda age 6
Materials:
Material (white)
Styrofoam craft balls
Paint
Hot glue
Lace or ribbon
Wood dowel
Cardboard
Direction:
Sew a straight dress out of your white matterial. Now add your trim and shoulder straps. Then take your styrofoam balls and cut them in half and paint them( pink, blue, and yellow). Let them dry and once dry you may glue them onto the dress to look like candy buttons on paper.
Then I made a lolly pop wand out of a wood dowel and some cardboard that I had cut and painted( 2 the same) once they are dry glue them onto the dowel. Then I used my left over ribbon and added it to the lolly pop.
Mincraft steve( right) worn by my son Seth age 9
Materials:
Box(2)
Paper bags
Paint
Saw/knife
Glue
Clear coat spray
Ruler
Styrofoam wreath
Directions:
Find a box that will fit for the body and head for steve. Cover it in paper bags( smooths it all out)
Now draw a checker board pattern all over the body and head to make it easier to paint so it looks pixilated.
Onces painted and eyes are cut out spay it with a clear coat to seal the paint in.
I used the stryofoam wreath to hold the head it place alittle better by gluing it inside the head.
