A word from Jade, the 'Smallest Mad Hatter' costume creator:
My 2 yr old son Devon Aaron is wearing the Mad Hatter costume I made for him.
Hat: Cut from foam board and covered with brown paint as a first coat and then with green strokes of paint on top to make it look old and dark. The price sign on the hat is hand written in thin brown paint and the edges of the paper were burned to give it a cool look. Feather is a sheer gold ribbon cut in the shape of a feather and I shredded the edges to make it look close to real. Glued a thin wire behind and glued that to right side of hat. Pins were made if straightened wire with glued beads at ends and stuck into hat and glued into place as well. Fabric on base of hat is a dark brown strip bunched up to give it a cool look and glued down. (Foam board $1, Wire $4, Beads already owned but you can find assorted packages in craft stores for $3-7, Ribbon for feather $4.50 on sale at Michaels in christmas ribbon aisle, Paint $1 a tube in acrylic craft paint aisle at Michaels, Glued everything with glue gun $5 at Michaels and glue sticks $4, Strip of any extra fabric laying around or can use felt which can be found for $1-2 at craft stores)
Wig: Store bought and glued to inside of hat so hat would fall or slide out of place. ($20) Had a hard time finding a cheaper one because I waited so late to get it. I'm sure you can find it cheaper.
Suit: His suit is a brown pin striped one that he owns with sewn gold ruffles on the cuffs and a red piece of ripped fabric sewn into the right hip pocket of the jacket. He is wearing a black cotton cord across his chest with small spools of thread I weaved together. I made the huge hanging bow tie from some extra tea shirt fabric I had and threw on some black boots he owns. (Suit $20 at a small cheap shop. He used it for 2 different photo shoots, Ruffles are from same gold ribbon used for feather on hat, Pocket strip of fabric can be anything and you can use any color or just skip this step, Spools of thread were part of a traveling sewing kit for $7 at a discount store in my area so I would recommend checking a dollar store by you, Bow tie was piece of left over tshirt fabric from an old tshirt I had.
Makeup: a little red under the eyes and purple on lids and lips to make him look a little cold and crazy! $1.09 for a four color kit in the dollar store
A lot of these things I already owned so it cost me close to nothing but it can cost anywhere from $10 if you own a lot of the things you need and up if you need to buy everything new. Just be creative and look around your home. I'm sure you can find many ways to put this costume together.
Voila! My take on The Mad Mad Hatter!
