A word from Hannah, the 'Manatee' costume creator:
My name is Hannah, and I am wearing a manatee costume. I went by the name of Hannatee for Halloween. I have loved manatees since I was in 3rd grade so this costume was a dream come true. I enjoyed the night as a lovable sea cow!
I wore a grey sweatshirt with a hood and sweatpants that I had at home. I had help from my grandmother to make a tail out of 1 yard of grey sweatshirt material and 1 yard of fabric interfacing to help keep the shape. We drew the shape of the tail to the length we wanted and then extended the length to go up my back and connected it to a string in order for it tie around my waist. We used the extra material to make mittens for the paddle-like flippers.
For my face, I covered it in grey acrylic paint and then used black halloween makeup for the eyes and shading. I made the lines along my cheeks darker to accent the jowls and shaded in my chin to give dimension. I added lines on my forehead to look like wrinkles. As for the nose, I bought a plastic cow nose from a Halloween shop and painted it grey and used black to accent the wrinkles and to paint in the nostrils.
And that is how I was able to live the day in the life of a manatee and it was AMAZING! My cousin needed a quick costume, he dressed as a tourist and together we were a Florida Manatee!
