A word from Lindsey, the 'Medusa and the Stone Warrior' costume creator:
I am Medusa and my husband Nick is the Stone Warrior. Our idea came from Greek mythology, Medusa turning her would be assassins into stone.
How To Medusa: I had a long multicolored wig from several years ago- I completely changed the wig by styling it with mesh ribbon to add volume and the illusion of snakes. I styled the wig into a faux hawk and then braided everything together. I spray painted snakes from the dollar store store gold and used the hair from the wig along with an entire 100 count pack of bobby pins to attach the snakes into the wig. The brow piece is molded foam latex painted with department store makeup and eye shadow and attached with spirit gum. Accessories obtained from sales racks at Goodwill, Torrid, and Wal-Mart and spray painted gold and black. Dress from Goodwill. Corset from burlesque show from last summer. Gold rope from local craft store. Shoes from sales rack at Torrid.
I feel the gold accents brought this look together- from the gold snakes to the gold shoes. All of the gold was created with spray paint- super easy. This costume in total cost less than $60- finding old dresses at Goodwill is always a plus. I added the corset to break up the costume and make it more dimensional- however this was not part of the original idea. Creating the wig took the longest amount of time- over 18 hours total. Makeup was inspired by a combination of images of real snakes. Body painted black with gold eyeshadow shimmer. Fishnets used with spray on hair color to give illusion of scales. Easy airbrush like affect and washes away with soap and water.
How To Stone Warrior- Knight/ Spartan armor found at Goodwill- originally black. The armor was spray painted gray, black, and white to give the effect of stone. Sword found at Dollar Store and also spray painted gray, black, and white. Total cost was lease than $15 including spray paint. Makeup is department store makeup and eye shadow.
Tip when using spray paint on items to be worn-- make sure plenty of time is given to allow item to completely dry... I know this sounds silly but this means days. Seriously. Allowing days for your items to dry also takes the smell of spray paint away.
