A word from Sara, the 'Medusa' costume creator:
My husband & I are salvagers, dumpster divers. This costume started with one plus size greek style gown and a simple rubber head piece for a Medusa costume. I began with the head piece, it was just painted gold so I used several different nail polishes to give it an ethereal snake skin look. Then I took a child's party tiara and stripped it of the fake gems, painted it with nail polish and added a collection of small (3 to 4")hard plastic snakes with thin wire. I painted those too and glued small red and green costume rhinestones as eyes. At the $ store I bought another packet of coiled rubber snakes, about 2" in diameter (coiled) of different colors. They came in a netted bag which I attached to the tiara and then wove the snakes into the netting so they set all over the sides of my head. (I painted these also) I had a long purple satin curtain in which I pulled a long piece of gold braided craft rope through the rod seam and draped it around my shoulders, then with a piece of ethereal greenish gold curtain scrap I used some odd costume jewelry rings to fashion a snake cloak as a top adornment to the cape. I purchased 4 more rubber snakes @ the $ tree, bendable and about a foot long and painted each a little differently. With a green and gold eyeliner I drew a scaly or sort of veiny crackling look around my face and neck. The cost of the costume was less than $15.00
