Medusa Costume

I, Desaray is the costume wearer and maker. It started with an idea of what I thought medusa would look like. Eventually, I started looking for dresses that I could make do with, to get the effect I wanted. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find anything that would work. My mom, my most supportive person in my life, told me to just make it myself.
So, that idea started to grow. I started with a sketch. Shopped for fabric, which was a lot more difficult than I thought it would be. Finally, I found the perfect fabric. I started with just draping the fabric to see how it would flow. I cut the fabric and started sewing. There were some learning curves I ran into. Next came creating the accessories. I started with the ropes around the waste and sleeves. Wrapping the rope didn't give me the exact look I wanted. Then I had the idea to make it a belt. After that, I started working on the crown and necklace. I got everything together and the in a few days it fell apart. Coming up with a fix took me a while but I ended up fixing it so it looked like we're clasped together.
Creating the breast plate/body armor was also a new experience. First time for me to work with Eva foam, heat guns and rubber cement. I started and after a few days later I had to start all over. One thing I had a hard time was finding rubber snakes and when I finally did there were only 5 packages. This created the hurtle of finding something that would mimic a snake. Lucky for me I found some green mesh ropes. Finally, completing the body armor, I had to use 5 headbands and rubber snakes to create a head piece that would all the snake to be throughout my hair. After that I made the arm bands. Being done with all that I painted everything black first and then went over that with some gold. Finally, completed I was able to put it all together.
