Merfolk Costume

This is me (Imuri) and my boyfriend, Max, as a merfolk couple. Merfolk are different than mermaids and mermen where merfolk live on land as they are a more evolved species. My boyfriend and I handmade 100% our costumes.
We got fabric and accessories like chains, sea shells, and Beads from Joann’s fabric.
For my costume , I cut a piece of fabric for my top and twisted it to for a bra shape. I got glued a sea star for the centerpiece. For the bottoms, I sewed a medium length skirt, then sewed another piece at the bottom to make it right at the hips and loose at the end.
I wore a wig to give it my mermaid a metallic look.
For my boyfriend’s costume,
He cut out individual tear drop shapes for his scales. He sewed then on regular shorts. With vinyl material, he cut straps out and used Velcro to stick then on the inside of his short. He glued chains and decor to the straps. He handmade a sword holster to give him a warrior merfolk look. The final touch was painting his body with blue body paint.
We put so much work into this, but we had so much fun!
