Despicable Me Family Costume Gru, Lucy and their Minions

Every Halloween our family loves to dress up together. We (parents) will be taking advantage of family costumes as long as the kids will allow us to. Halloween is my husbands' favourite time of year. The people in the picture are, Nancy/mom as Lucy, Luke/dad as Gru, Tabyana our 5 year old daughter in Minion with two eyed goggles, Lelan our 3 year old son in Minion with one eyed goggle, and Lennox our 2 year old infant in the baby minion costume. Despicable me is one of our favourite kid movies, we wanted to do a costume that people could relate to, or would know for sure. So my husband made these awesome Minion costumes. By far one of our best family costumes so far. The Minions cost at least $60 in materials each and about 20 hours of labour. My husband used garbage bins as the bodies, glued on felt all over the body and the lid of the garbage bins with hot glue gun glue. Pulled bright yellow felt on top of the felt and held with spray adhesive. The hair is glued on black pipe cleaners, the goggles are silver spray painted abs pipes, the band is made with innertube plastic and screwed into the abs pipe with little nuts and screws. The mouth on the one Minion is made with black felt and white foam for the teeth. The second Minion's tongue is made of foam and red felt. We sewed the yellow felt for arms, and purchased black gloves for the hands. Used my husbands navy blue work coveralls with a black sharpy for the Gru symbol. Our baby Minion was purchased at Talize and Value village for the yellow sweatshirt and blue overalls, coloured the gru symbol with a black sharpy. The hair is made of black felt, the goggle strap is a black hair band, the eye piece is the cap of a spray paint can, some paper for the eyeball and pensil crayons. For Gru, we purchased the coat and pants from Value Village, purchased a grey scarf and spray painted the lines on it. For Lucy, we purchased the Wig at Value village, cut it a bit to mimick Lucys' hair, the scarf and glasses were also purchased at Value Village and the teal trench coat was purchased at Talize. The other pieces of our costumes, the clothing probably cost us another $50 or so. And this is how our Despicable Me Family costume came about, one of the favourites in our neighbourhood. Couldn't be missed!
