A word from Megan, the 'Maleficent' costume creator:
I am dressed as the fairy Maleficent. I love the Maleficent movie and wanted to recreate the costume for Halloween. The dress is made with crushed silk with a scrap leather belt. The horns, elf ears, and wig were purchased. The wings are crafted from 1x1 aluminum square pipes bolted at pivot points. I made a prototype out of wood to get my length, cut, and holes in the correct place. The measurements will change with the wing size. The long and medium feathers are wire, plaster, and broadcloth sandwiched together then bolted loosely to the wing arms. The sleeve of the wings are made by dyed turkey feathers sewn onto a light, thin cut of fleece. The reverse side of the sleeves are ties that are tied to the wing arms. The wing arms are bolted to a board covered in foam on the reverse side. Then the wing arms are attached to a linear actuator and two 12v batteries controlled by a remote.
