A word from Olivia, the 'Mr. Peanut' costume creator:
After suffering a spinal cord injury and being left paralyzed, I had to regain my ability to walk and now require a cane to get around. I decided to embrace this accessory and incorporate it into my Halloween costume. After researching famous characters with canes, I decided Mr. Peanut would be a fun costume to DIY. I created the hat using construction paper and hot glued it together. I purchased foam letters for the “Mr. Peanut” moniker on the hat. I glued the paper hat to a black headband. The monocle was fashioned out of wire. I purchased a yellow shirt and glued felt squares to it. The remainder of the outfit was put together with white gloves, saddle shoes, leggings, and a long sleeve black shirt. Since I had most of the materials, it only cost me under $20 dollars. Everyday people stare at me just because I am a young female with a cane, which is different than what they are used to. It was enjoyable to use my cane for “fun” and have a night where I received attention for being Mr. Peanut and not for my disability. All my friends loved that I incorporated my cane into my costume, and other people loved the “nutty”, unique character.
