This homemade costume for girls entered our 2015 Halloween Costume Contest.
A word from Amy, the 'Nail Polish and File' costume creator:
My daughter, Caylin is wearing the costume. We make our costumes each year and choose a theme according to what interest my kids have for that particular year. This year Caylin has been very interested in painting her nails and the nail salon. So I thought how fitting to create her a costume that fits her passion.
The materials I used for this were cardboard, tape, paint, Velcro and posterboard. My cost to make this was 52 cents to purchase the posterboard since I had on hand the rest of the materials.
I first started off measuring my daughter to get the correct length of the cardboard. After cutting to the desired size, I used a heavy round paper roll to wrap the cardboard around overnight to give it the circular shape. Next step was to tape the ends of the cardboard together to make a circular bottle shape. Then I measured and cut a circular piece of cardboard, with hole cut out in the center for her head, to tape on top of the bottle shape of cardboard. I then measured to cut out the arm holes. I measured and cut the posterboard, to make a bottlecap, according to her head size and taped the edges together, then cut out a hole for her face. I attached Velcro to the body of the costume and also to the posterboard on the front and back side to help hold the cap on her head. Then we proceeded to paint the costume.
She received many compliments for her unique costume and had to stop numerous times because so many people asked to take her picture. She won first place in the costume contest at her school.
