A word from Rita, the 'Nutcracker' costume creator:
The jacket on this costume was and altered blazer I found in a Good Will store. I added the lapels and cuffs. I added buttons and chains to the front of the blazer and made epaulets for the shoulders out of felt, ribbon and fringe. The pants were purchased at a good will store and then I sewed blood stripes (also purchased) onto the sides of the pants. The head was made mostly from burlap that I molded (a long process) by using a larch plastic halloween caldron to hold its shape while I used mod podge glue to stiffen it with. Once that was done I added fabric for the hair and beard. I used painting and felt for the face and felt (stuffed) for the hat. I added more fabric and buttons to the hat too. I added a lever to the back of the jacket with felt that I stuffed. This costume was a challenge mostly because just before it was done, we were hit by hurricane Sandy and so I had to sew the rest by hand and by the light of candles since we had no power. The person wearing the costume is my son Jon.
