A word from Tom, the 'Plants vs. Zombies' costume creator:
My boys, Tre (6) and Tonio (4) are absolutely in love with the video game Plants vs. Zombies (my 1 year old, Talia, had no say!!!) and I couldn't find any commercial ones available so I decided to DIY it! I made the baby's Sunflower shoes with berets and sunflowers that I bought from Hobby Lobby. The headband I made from scratch out of yellow foam paper. The buckethead zombie I made the mask from scratch with white foam eyes and fake zombie teeth that I adhesive caulked to a mask I custom painted. The bucket I metallic spray painted a small pail (I couldn't find a small tin bucket anywhere) and then hot glued velcro to the bottom to attach it to a black baseball cap that I sewed opposing velcro to. I made the tie from scratch with matching material (I also made the 5 white stripes on his tie to match the video game!). I filled the "knot" of the tie with poly fil and then sewed it directly to the shirt so it couldn't come off and wouldn't bother him around his neck. The pea shooter had to be almost entirely from scratch. The pot is a real flower pot with the bottom cut out and then weather sealed (to prevent him from being scratched) the rim. I made suspenders for it out of elastic. The neckpiece is actually a foam golf visor with leaves attached to it. The helmet I had to hand carve from styrofoam which had to be sealed before being painted. My costume (Crazy Dave) was basic clothes with a pot filled with foam to shape to my head and a fake beard that I had to trim to match the character from the game. The wagon I decorated with actual graphics from the game so people who didn't know it would see what we were supposed to look like. I hope you enjoy!
