A word from Vanessa, the 'Portuguese Woman-o-War' costume creator:
This is me modeling my labour of love which took about three days to make. I was inspired by social media feeds and the discovery of new technologies like battery operated electroluminescent wire. Although I didn't end up using the EL wire as originally planned as it makes a high pitched tone when turned on (not ideal when you've got six of them mounted around your head). Instead i used five sets of LED fairy lights which omitted a brighter glow and covered more area. The head was formed using a wire hanging basket from the garden centre and unraveled loofahs were used for the tentacles. Whoever came up with this solution is a genius! I bought my first sewing machine to make it....well worth the investment now that costumes like this can be created for all to enjoy! I can't wait to wear it again.
