A word from Ashley, the 'Princess Peacock' costume creator:
Our 4 year old daughter decided that she wanted to be a "princess peacock" for Halloween this year. I have hand-made all of her costumes since she was born. I did a lot of research online but couldn't find anything that remotely resembled my vision. I wanted her to be big and bold with a huge feather fan. With nothing to go off of, I began to improvise.
I collected a bunch of donated dresses from friends and good will, gathered the fabrics, and sewn them together in flowing layers. I spray painted a pettiskirt gold that we had around the house to add volume. The mask is hand made using paint, sequence, ribbon, and rhinestones.
The plume was a fun challenge. I drilled a bunch of holes into a block of wood then hot blued the feathers in. I don't have the appropriate set up to use construction tools so I did it in my living room with the wood between my knees. Needless to say, I ended up with quite a sizable flesh wound when the drill slipped. I used sequenced ribbon and picture hanging hardware to make a holster for it. All in all, the whole thing took 12-14 hours to complete and cost about $200.
