A word from Elizabeth, the 'Queen of Hearts' costume creator:
My daughter, Macie wanted to be the queen of hearts this year. Since I love period dramas, I wanted to try to make an 18th century inspired costume for her. I started at the thrift store and found a good "base dress" to start from. After that I cut off the sleeves and added lace from a repurposed toddler dress, scalloped the skirt and added another layer of fabric underneath. I added gold trim and rhinestones to the top as well. I couldn't find a large heart to embellish the neckline so I made one out of air dry clay and painted it and added more beads and rhinestones. The collar was the trickiest part, but I finally decided that craft foam covered in fabric and lace would stand up right. The crown is craft foam and rhinestones and the scepter is a glass Christmas ornament, dowel, craft foam and of course, rhinestones. I estimate the cost was between $25 and $30 but I didn't keep track. My daughter loves wearing this costume and automatically assumes a haughty pose as soon as she puts it on.
