This homemade costume for pets entered our 2012 Halloween Costume Contest.
A word from Carol, the 'Red Hat Society' costume creator:
Leah Alisabeth Ashlyn, my 16 year old fawn pug is wearing her homemade costume dressed as a member of the Red Hat Society. The idea for this costume just came to my mind as I was wanted to dress "Leah" in something that was age appropriate for her.
I purchased a white straw hat from the Build A Bear store and painted it red with floral paint purchase at a craft store. I purchased the purple feathers, ribbons and flowers for the hat from a craft store and hot glued them on. I hot glued a piece of elastic to the hat and placed a pull stop on the elastic to make it adjustable so that the hat would stay in on. (This was not a problem as "Leah" loves wearing hats). I puchased a purple knit fabric to make the dress free style (no pattern) and embellished it with red hat appliques. The red boa and white pearls were also purchased at a craft store. I made braclets for her four paws using purple pony tail holders to which I glued red hat society buttons purchased at a craft store.
Total cost to make the costume was about $25.00.
