A word from Debra, the 'Regina & Zelena' costume creator:
My friend Megan Morris (she's Sparklemore Cosplay, and I'm Red Stone Dreamery on FB) attended Dallas FanDays last weekend as Regina and Zelena, the witch sisters, from the show 'Once Upon A Time.'
I did the sewing and Megan made her headpiece. She used a store-bought mask and cut off the lower part to make it the right shape for what Regina wears. She then sanded and painted it with acrylic paints before gluing in a felt liner and then beads & rhinestones to the outside with some glitter puff paint as well. Then we poked a few holes to add a ribbon to tie around her pony tail and some looped wire along back edge to stick bobby pins through. The sparkly hair piece around her pony tail we found at a local store.
For the sewing of our costumes I used a thrifted little black dress for the base of Regina. I then added a lace collar off another thrifted dress onto the collar of the first one and then added on more glitter paints to make it sparkle even more. I added damask fabric to the back of the collar, and then used that same fabric to make a bolero jacket and a poofy over-skirt. I also made a 'bum'roll' to go under the skirt to give it extra poof. For my Zelena outfit, I made a basic black under-skirt with pockets. Then I made a burgundy corset-laced bodice with stiff interfacing and gold lace applique. The over-coat/dress was also made from scratch after finding the almost perfect wood-grain black fabric while on a trip to Atlanta earlier this year. The fabric is a lightweight knit, so I lined the entire thing with black-crystal organza to stiffen things up a bit, especially within the poofy shoulders. The collar has very thick interfacing within it to hold it up. I then hand stitched all the gold lace trim along the edges. The belt I made using more of the thick interfacing and some black vinyl fabric. I then sewed on the black metal spikes and used puff paint for the raised designs on it. After that dried, I burnished it with additional gold paint making it more densely applied around the center design. The belt attaches with two sets of twill-tape ribbons so it's adjustable. I also made the green necklace after ordering one off eBay and finding it to be too small in comparison to what was seen in the TV show. I used some metal filigree pieces, rhinestones, and a felt backer, all glued together and hung on a chain.
