A word from Seirra, the 'Sally the Ragdoll from the Nightmare Before Christmas' costume creator:
I had wanted to be Sally for many years & this was really kinda a last minute throw together that was mainly decided upon based on whether or not I could get the wig in time. (I ordered it less than 3 weeks before halloween- it arrived 2 days before!) I started with a nylon bodysuit I ordered off wish, in white. I took that & some white gloves and dyed them to the ideal skin tone of blue, which saved a lot of time & makeup to achieve the skin tone. Then, while wearing them to assure proper fit with stretch, I sewed on all the stitching. This took some tricky contorting for some parts, & i used my legs while sewing the arm parts since sewing requires 2 hands. I super glued on fake fingernails to the gloves & they stayed on surprisingly well.
For the dress, I used paper to make a mockup template based off a dress I already had of similar style. I rummaged through the garage sale clothing rack to find some of the fabrics, some of which were old t-shirts. For some of the colors to be right I had to dye the fabric to adjust them, I cut felt for the large spot patterns, and fabric paint for the purple swirls, sleeve stripes, & pink/grey plaid & polka dot patch. I even sewed in a pocket to the dress (figured it would be handy on halloween night). I was impressed with myself that I managed to get the entire dress sewn together in just a day! Then I went back with black yarn to do the decorative larger stitches over each patch section where they came together.
I had shoes that would match already, and used rolled down striped knee highs for the socks. For the blue face makeup I used mehron which I got off amazon & a setting powder which helped the makeup to keep from wearing off through the night. I used some of the small leftover yarn clippings to superglue as the stitches on the face. I found this to be much easier and came out looking better than trying to draw or paint the face stitching on with makeup. They pull right off after pretty easily (just don't wash/scrub your face really good before starting the makeup so there's a layer of dead skin cells for easier removal)
The background in the pictures I painted on an unfolded refridgerator box supported with a large wood frame. My boyfriend helped me make the coffin and I painted it.
