A word from Melissa, the 'Sam' costume creator:

My 3 year old son, Sebastian, is wearing this home made Sam costume. If you know your horror movies, he’s the main character from the movie Trick r Treat. He’s the enforcer of Halloween traditions so you better follow his rules or else! We chose this character to wear at at horror movie convention and we were planning on making something different for him for his activities and trick or treat, but he loved it so much we decided this was it.The jumpsuit he’s wearing was from a dinosaur costume pattern that I tweaked to suit what I needed. This was also my first sewing project ever. After sewing together the jumpsuit which is fleece, I added the details to the shoe covers(white fleece, patches( yellow fleece, and I made my own pattern to make a butt flap iconic to the character. To make it look dirty, I used a dry brush and brown paint and delicately brushed it on the fabric paying close attention to the knees and other areas it would appear to be more worn. The gloves we bought and cut to fit them to my sons hands. We added burlap to them to match the characters gloves. We also made a kinda scarf out of burlap and used hemp string to create the stitches. The lollipop was made from scrap plastic, pieces of plastic from pop bottles, lights which we removed from my sons light up cars and a wooden dowel which we painted orange and added black electrical tape. I freely made the burlap sack by sewing the sides of a square shape and creating a draw string. We also added fake blood to it. The most challenging part was creating the mask. It took 3 attempts before we nailed it. Basically we soaked burlap in water and placed it over a ball. We secured it at the bottom and smoothed out the creases then brushed on Elmer’s glue. Once it was dry, we carefully popped the ball and placed a tube around the bottom to keep the round shape. We used hemp string to make the stitches and added buttons for eyes. The mask is secured to my son with suspenders. The most common question I get asked is can he see or breathe? Burlap is a lightly woven fabric making it like looking through a screen door. And it’s far easier to breathe in it than store bought masks. My son loves this costume and enjoys wearing it. The reaction we have gotten from this costume is humbling. It’s unreal how many people Haagen requested his picture. I’ve even been asked to make a tutorial. This is the most detailed costume we’ve created to date. We hope you love it as much as we do and the many people we’ve met🎃
