This homemade costume for families entered our 2014 Halloween Costume Contest.
A word from Elizabeth, the 'Scooby and the Gang' costume creator:
My 3 year old son, Ollie, loves Scooby-Doo! We sing the Scooby-Doo theme song every day and he knows each word. Naturally, when Halloween approached, he requested a Scooby Doo costume. Our family surprise was that I, Mommy Lizze, collected items from garage sales, ebay, thrift shops and our closets to create penny-saver costumes for the rest of the family. Ollie was delighted when each of us came out of our rooms dressed as the other members of Mystery, Inc.
As we trick or treated our way through fun local events and neighborhoods, we serenaded all with the Scooby Theme Song and took pictures with lots of kids and families who thought we were volunteers or performers. It was a blast!
Gong-Gong (my mom) is Velma, lovely as ever in her burgundy corduroys that we took in 6 inches at the waist, 80's orange suit jacket and backwards bulky knit cardigan fashioned into a vest after we lopped the sleeves off...oh and $0.89 orange nail polish. Silly Velma forgot her magnifying glass in the car, darn.
Total cost: $4.87
Daddy Adam (my fiance) is a modern Fred in a white zip hoodie, blue polo with white sleeves sewn in, an orange cloth napkin ascot at his neck and a preppy golf hat to round out the look.
Total cost: $3.99 (for the pack of 8 napkins and now we have awesome orange cloth napkins!)
Mommy Lizze (AKA me) is Daphne, wearing refurbished purple suede boots, white corduroy skinny jeans that were dip-dyed pink and taken in at the waist, lime green headband made from an unraveled net loofah and a coat and scarf combo straight from the hall closet (worn many times without realizing it was Daphne-like) and $0.89 purple nail polish and barbie pink lipstick.
Total cost: $13.12
Ollie is Scooby-Doo, wearing a costume fashioned out of two separate costumes sewn together to accommodate his big ol' melon head. He is also wearing a glow in the dark skeleton body suit under the costume for humor and warmth. "Did you know if you unmask Scooby, he's a skeleton monster? And if you unmask the skeleton monster, it's a 3 year old jacked up on sugar?" --I bet Velma knew.
Total cost: $12.95
