This homemade costume for boys entered our 2020 Halloween Costume Contest.
A word from Megan, the 'Scorched Smoke Detector' costume creator:
This is my 7 year old son, Bannister Aedan Harper. He is wearing an original costume that the two of us thought would be both hysterical and one of a kind. The idea came to us as we were reviewing fire safety at home, working to complete a couple of remaining tasks of a Cub Scout Adventure Badge.
For this costume, I used multiple pieces of white foam board, a small grated piece of metal, one red and one green light operated with battery, elastic to secure both sides over Bannister, super and hot glue to affix the layers, custom cut vinyl with a silhouette cutting machine for all logos and words, a white baseball cap affixed with tons of white stuffing, additional white foam board was cut and used along the sides of the hat to allow for significant height of stuffing, and finally black spray paint to give the illusion of being hot smoke and debris. The most difficult part was getting the layers on the smoke detector to remain flush and keeping the height and consistentcy of the hat smoke during movement. All and all, it was a fun project that turned out extremely cute and everyone at his school made sure to let him know that he had the most original costume this year. Cheers!
