A word from Phyllis, the 'The Grinch that Stole Christmas' costume creator:
We started doing family group costumes when my son was two. Now the children pick the theme and I get to figure out how to make things work. The Grinch is Mom, me - Phyllis, my daughter is Cindy Lou Who and my son is Max, the Grinch's dog. For the Grinch, I found a green scarf at Walmart, sewed green "scarf" yarn to the green scarf and then sewed "hairy" scarf to a pair of leggings. Dyed white gloves green and sewed "scarf" yarn to gloves. Got red long sleeve, oversized shirt at goodwill and sewed white batting to bottom and cuffs. Used Christmas stockings for shoes, with sewn on white Pom pons and Santa hat. Looked at Dr. Suess book for ideas for face paint. Cindy Lou Who wore an old Christmas dress and cape from our dress up stash. Her hair is her own and am empty toilet paper roll helped to keep it standing up, which I got that idea from online. Max, the dog was an old bear costume that we reused, I made and added the dog tail and found "just right" sticks from our yard to sew to his head. That was not as easy as I first thought it might be. We had a lot of fun with this theme and received many compliments.
