A word from Megan, the 'The Itsy Bitsy Spider' costume creator:
My husband came up with the idea for 'The Itsy Bitsy Spider' while reading the book to our kids. We like to dress up every year as a family and thought this one would be fun this year as our youngest is a baby and while the 'spout' is holding him it looks like he's 'climbing up the water spout':)
We made all of our costumes from scratch! I used a pattern for the baby romper and added extra spider legs and eyes. My sewing skills greatly improved this year!:) Its made of fleece and legs are stuffed and sewn in. My husband is the 'water spout' and he made his costume out of fleece and cardboard and fabric with vinyl lettering. He designed and constructed and even sewed his own costume!
I made the boys costumes as the "rain" in the song the Itsy Bitsy spider. They have felt clouds which are quilted with a front and back cloud and rain drops ironed onto their pants and they are wearing rain boots which was appropriate for our rainy Washington weather! And my costume, "Out came the SUN and dried up all the rain" was made and designed from scratch also using felt, interfacing and I used a sewing machine and serger to sew it! It looks simple but wasn't easy! It was hard to get those darn sun rays to stand up straight, they kept flopping over:) But hey, look on the bright side-right?
We had so much fun dressing up as a family! We have done a family theme for the past 8 years since we were married and had kids. Our kids love it and never complain but rather look forward to it! Our boys are 7, 4 and 6 months. We always like to do a theme that is original, recognizable, not over-done, and not gory or scary. We always make our costumes homemade and design them ourselves. I'm an amateur seamstress so its always a great challenge for me to create the ideas my husband comes up with! Each year its a big feat that takes us all month to create the costumes! And of course we discuss our costume ideas all year long! This year it took us a month working on our costumes every night after the kids went to bed. But it is ALWAYS worth it!
