This homemade costume for families entered our 2017 Halloween Costume Contest.
A word from Brittany, the 'The Little Mermaid' costume creator:
Every year, my husband and I (and now our son too!) dress up together for Halloween. I knew this year I would be rocking a serious bump and wanted to rock it in style. What better way to rock it than with it being a rock! I had a vision of the iconic scene where Ariel is breached on a large rock with the sea life below her. This escalated to a family "Little Mermaid" reenactment.
Ariel: All components sewed.
*The leggings was the first mission. I used a white cotton blend fabric and cut out the lower legging portion based on my measurements. These leggings were then dipped in blue dye, then green dye. The belly bump was draped, and then lined with a spandex material. The bump was painted to look like a rock with fake fabric barnacles and starfish attached. Leggings are painted with scenes from the Little Mermaid with fabric paint.
*The tutu is comprised of three different mesh fabrics: a coarse, thick one for the base, a lighter weight one for the body of the tutu and then a blue sparkly one for the top. Three different plush fish hang below with clear thread.
*The tail consists of a sheen sequined fabric overlaid on another green fabric. There is a wire within and it is stuffed with foam and cotton stuffing.
*The shell bra was draped over a swimsuit and sewn. This was attached to the belly bump with hook & eyes.
Ursula: The bodice of Ursula is based on McCalls pattern #7124. I used one of my husband's jackets as a pattern for the sleeves and the collar. This costume took 6 yards of black crepe and 5 yards of purple satin. The tentacles were stuffed with foam and cotton stuffing, as well as wire to give them shape. The last step was to paint them with fabric paint to make the suction cups.
*Necklace - made from a vacant snail shell (painted gold) and a shoelace.
Sebastian, the crab: The base of this costume was a long sleeve shirt and pants. The shell was made from a 2XL men's red sweatshirt.
*Looking at a picture of a crab, I cut out the arms / claws and sewed them to the shell. The back of the shell and the claws were stuffed with foam.
*The eyes were made from leftover sweatshirt material and white felt, sewn to a hat.
*The hand claws were also made from leftover sweatshirt material, stuffed with cotton stuffing and have mittens sewn on the inside.
