A word from Lillian, the 'The Magical Earth Dragon' costume creator:

This costume was very fun to create! I started making it in early March of this year and finished it the Friday before Halloween.

The materials I used were: foam for the foundation of the head, which you can find on Amazon, the body was made out of different types of fabric, which you can find in a number of places. I also used paint, hot glue, plastic fake claws, glitter, fake fur, fake jewels, carving foam, and buckram which for clarification is like a fabric version of paper mache.

As for tips I'd recommend starting as soon as possible and also draw out your idea in detail. I'd also recommend to let your imagination run wild but keep it down to earth. As for how I built it, I had help from my amazing teacher on things I hadn't even thought about, like weight, cost and other things. But I'll try to give a watered down version of what I did. I first started with the head, by carving the head from foam, then I covered the head in bickram and then painted and decorated it. After that I worked on my front legs by using pvc pipes to make stilts. My dad helped me with this. Then I worked on the feet by making the feet out of carving foam and zip ties to give them the wrist joint. After that I worked on the neck, I used a bike helmet and pool noodles for the base then covered that in fabric and added layers. When I finished those things, I got the measurements of the sides of both the neck, body and tail and created the scales, I drew them out on my chosen fabric then machine sewed them then stuffed them with fosco and hand sewed them to the neck. After that was done I finished the body and tail and covered it in a layer of shiny blue fabric as my dragon’s skin then sewed the scales on. When that was done I attached the head to the neck and sewed on the fur, then I was finished!

It was so much fun but again I highly recommend that you give yourself a lot of extra time.. oh and a budget!! My costume cost roughly close to $500 for materials not to mention the many hours of labor. That's how I created my dragon costume!

I went to several trunk or treats in my hometown and the farmers market the Saturday before Halloween. The reactions I got were incredible. A lot of kids came up to me and patted the fur on the head. A few of them were excited to see me, but after coming up they got a bit nervous, so I would tell them I was a friendly dragon. I love being in my costume I feel like I AM THE DRAGON!!!
