A word from Jennifer, the 'The Three Little Kittens' costume creator:
The Three Little Kittens, They Lost Their Mittens…
My daughter Alyvia, who is nine months old, really LOVES cats. I was trying to think of a unique, 'never been done before' costume and and then I remembered the classic nursery rhyme, "The Three Little Kittens" and thought that would be perfect for my daughter to be! She is dressed as the mama cat in the song and is holding her three little kittens in the pockets on her dress. She has made a pie, has the mittens hung up to dry, so she is one happy little cat!
The items used in this costume are:
1. Vintage dress and bonnet
2. White fabric for the pockets
3. faux fur (for the pants, ears, tail)
4. plastic lid to shape the ears
5. Large pipe cleaner (for tail)*(covered with fur)
6. Baby shoes (covered with fur)
7. Crocheted kittens (3)
8. Crocheted mittens (3 sets of 2)
9. Clothes pin and sring
10. Wooden dowel (cut in half)
11. Wooden blocks (2)
12. Pot pie tin
13. Red and Tan felt (for pie) and stuffing
14. Picture of the "Three Little Kittens" book cover (and a old book to attach it to!)
15. Sewing machine, hot glue, crochet supplies
I made this costume by getting a vintage style dress offline. Then I sewed to oversized pockets on the front of the dress for the 3 kittens to sit in (then sewed the kittens into them). I also used a pair of my daughter's pants to make the pattern for the fur pants. I used the sewing machine to make them. Then I took a pair of her soft shoes and glued faux fur on them. I used the large pipe cleaner as a tail and wrapped/glued faux fur on that and attached it to the pants. For the ears, I used a plastic butter lid. I cut triangles out of it and put faux fur on them. For the kittens and mittens, my mother crocheted them for me, but any three kittens would do. For the pie I used a pot pie tin and put stuffing in it. Then I used red and white strips of felt and criss-crossed them. For the clothes line, I used a large dowel and cut it in half and then attached it to 2 wooden bases (screw). Then I put two holes in the dowels and put to clothes line string through it. Lastly, I printed a picture of a vintage-style "Three Little Kittens" book and glued/taped it to another book that I had. For the face, due to the fact that my daughter is so young and I was nervous to put any costume paint in her face, I used brown eye shadow to give her that brown-cat face look. Then I used eye liner to draw on the stripes, whiskers, nose etc.
