A word from Melissa, the 'Thomas the Train' costume creator:
My son Owen who is 2 loves Thomas the Train and I decided to make him his thomas with his red wagon. It took me almost 3 weeks to make this train out of plywoood, 2x4s, pvc pipe, concrete support, and papermache face.
I started with 2x4s inside the wagon and bolted the sides I had cut out to the wagon. I made a box inside to nail the concrete supporter to and then I just pieced together the rest to transform the engine.
I used a piece of galvanized metal from the piping section for his smoke stack and a 3" pvc cap. After chalking everything together I primed ans painted.
I nalied a 5 gallong bucket inside so i had something to nail the face too. I made the face feom plywood, papermache, packing paper and styfoam circles for the eyes.
When his face was nailed on and it was almost completen my 2 yr old clapped. I place a faucet handle, pvc piping, and watch heads for pressure gauges. I made a workable door and brake. There's also a bell. THE smoke stack works with dry ice, and there's an under cabinet light that is hooked in front that works as Thomas' spotlight.
We took it to an fall fest and everyone though his costume was a display. WE had children trying to climb in and parents taking pics of their kids in it. They didn't have an idea that I built the train from top to bottom.
Owen was pictured in the local newspaper with his "choo choo".
