A word from Leslie, the 'Top Gun - Maverick' costume creator:
My son Kaison is 18 months (infant category) and wearing the costume. I came up with the idea because Top Gun is one of my all time favorite movies and my brother is a pilot. The F-14 Tomcat is very close to the exact plane. I printed a schematic and hand measured and drew out each piece of the plane on foam board. I cut each piece by hand using a box cutter. Once the pieces were all cut I molded them, taped them with gorilla tape, hot glued all the edges then painted with spray paint that was good for foam and matte. I attached the wings with dowl rods and the decals were printed and glued on. The entire plane was then sprayed with mouge pooge to seal it from the rain. Then I slipped the plane over one of his car push strollers. His flight suit was ordered online and I got glued his patches on which I found at a store. He also had aviator sunglasses, top gun hat and dog tags. It took us about 4 hours to get down one block because everyone was stopping us and taking pictures and wanted to know how I built it. We even had people offer to buy it. It was a successful project and already thinking of how I will top this next year because he loved it and did not want to get out!
