This homemade costume for groups entered our 2018 Halloween Costume Contest.
A word from Pamela, the 'Treehouse of Horror - Kang, Kodos & Homer' costume creator:
We are Kang and Kodos from the treehouse of horror episodes from The Simpsons joined by Homer Simpson! All costumes are handmade with fabric, styrofoam, duct tape, paper mache, spray glue and hot glue.
Wearing the Kang and Kodos costumes are myself Pamela and my husband Tom. Wearing the Homer Simpson costume is our friend Maria. We’ve all loved The Simpsons show since we were kids especially the Treehouse of Horror episodes because Halloween is our favorite holiday!!
These costumes were definitely a labor of love with each costume averaging around $100. They were a ton of fun to make and to wear at near by events. Definitely a popular one!
For the Kand and Kodos costumes:
- We started with a paper mache base and then added duct tape for more stability.
-We then cut out the openings for the eye and mouth and added more newspaper to create facial expressions.
-A styrofoam half circle was added for the eye and black mesh fabric for the mouth.
-We cut out teeth from sheets of white fabric and glued those to the mesh. -We then sprayed glue on the body and then added green fabric to the entire thing.
-Darker green circles were added to the tops of the costumes for their age spots.
-The rings are large wooden knitting circles and we glued blue fabric to those and poked holes to add lights that are battery operated.
-We cut out tentacles from the green fabric and stuffed with cotton and glued to the wooden ring.
-We left two tentacle unstuffed for our arms.
For the Homer Simpson’s costume:
-Maria started with a paper mache base for the head.
-Duct tape was added for more stability.
-The holes for the eyes and mouth were cut out and made to form a facial expression.
-Paper materials were added to the face to make the nose and the ears.
-Yellow fabric was then glued to the entire head.
-The eyes are small half circles.
-Yellow fabric was added for the arms to a thrift store white polo shirt.
-Maria made gloves for her hands from fabric that matched the fabric of the head.
-The pants were a thrift store find but needed to be hemmed.
