A word from Bree, the 'Ursula' costume creator:
This is my step-daughter. She wanted to be Ursula this year so I came up with this design and made it happen.
Materials:
1 size 12 adults black dress at goodwill for $10
1 yard of purple cotton blend purple fabric for the underside of the tentacles
2rolls of purple tulle
Purple puff paint
How to make:
Sew top bodice of dress to fit person wearing (in this case take seam in)
Cut out triangle shapes for top bodice and sew to shirt *
Measure out 8 equal sections starting at knees and ending at feet -mark with chalk
Cut the sections in straight lines from the bottom
Cut each section into a triangle shape to form tentacles
Take purple fabric and lay one cut tentacle from dress on top as template and cut 8 from that
Put right sides together of tentacles together, pin, sew, turn right side out
Stuff with stuffing - add wire if you would like them to be curved sew purple part of tentacle to under layer of dress
Sew tulle under each opening between tentacles
Use puff paint to draw circles on all tentacles- let dry
Sew end of tentacle with needle and thread to dress to create the illusion they are floating
Optional- sew shirt to bodice instead of painting body purple*
