This homemade costume for couples entered our 2015 Halloween Costume Contest.
A word from Julia, the 'Toad and Toadette' costume creator:
Derek and Julia spent roughly 5 hours assembling this Super Mario Bros Toad and Toadette couple's costume! While this is more involved than a lot of other DIY Toad/Toadette projects, our costumes turned out really well and will certainly last a long time!
Vests "how-to":
We purchased red, blue, and gold fabrics from Jo-Ann Fabrics. We made patterns outlining our torsos using newspaper (one large piece for the back, and two smaller parts for the front) and traced these onto the fabric. Using a cutting set (this one from Amazon is recommended: https://www.amazon.com/Fiskars-95237097J-Rotary-Cutting-Set/dp/B000B7K9UI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1446477839&sr=8-2&keywords=fabric+cutter), we cut out and sewed the three pieces together using a sewing machine. Two long strips of gold trim were then sewn alongside the bottom and front opening/neckline.
Hats “how-to”:
We purchased two 4” and four 2.5” foam balls, pillow stuffing, and pink/white fabrics from Jo-Ann Fabrics (we also used red remnants from the Toadette vest for the circles on Toad’s hat). We used elastic to make headbands that fit around our heads (to fit a couple centimeters above our eyebrows), sewing the two ends of the elastic together. We then (safely) put an open plastic bag over our heads, stretched the elastic band over the bag in place on our foreheads, inverted the plastic bag back up and over the elastic bands, and pinned the bag to the elastic band (creating a plastic bag mold of our heads). We took this off our heads, and stapled the bag around the elastic band. We cut handles off two more plastic bags and taped them together to form the shape of the two hats. We filled this “pouch” with pillow stuffing, and then taped it to the opening of the plastic bag (secured to the elastic band). Stretching the pink and white fabric (roughly 3.5 ft squares) respectively over the stuffed plastic bags, we bunched and hand stitched the fabric to the plastic bag covered elastic.
For the Toadette hat, we cut 5 large white circles using the lid of a large Whey protein container and 12 little white circles using a small spice container lid. I cut ellipses from the pink fabric remnants and hot glued them to the foam balls. Then using the same hot glue gun, I glued the five large circles to the hat itself using a trace amount of glue, and 6 small circles each for the bottom pink foam ball. I attached the balls together and also to the hat using a white pipe cleaner and safety pins, although you can also use rope or thick yarn. We attached the five large red circles to Toad’s white hat in a similar fashion, although we did not have to worry about the additional foam balls for this hat.
Have fun recreating this costume project!
